PictureSTEP 1
HOW WE DID IT:
We took all existing obstacles into consideration. Here we have baseboards, outlets, supply, return and 2nd floor walkway. We measured all distances and planned out the design to maximize the entertainment unit.

PictureSTEP 2
Protected hardwood floors with rosin paper and blue tape. We used 2x6s and 3/4" cabinet grade sandeply for base. We built the base height to allow baseboard to continue all the way around the unit once completed.

PictureSTEP 3
We planned out the cabinet spacing and reinforced the the area under where the TV will sit to help support it.

PictureSTEP 4
Measured the TV and planned out the upper cabinet shelf spacing. We installed an additional shelf above the TV to help balance the space. We built the TV support shelf at a specific height so that the center of the TV would align with the customers eye height while they were sitting on the couch.

PictureSTEP 5
We added 1x4 facsia, custom segmented arches, crown molding and baseboard.

PictureSTEP 6
Caulked all gaps, filled all nail holes, taped off the walls, primed all wood and painted the first finish coat.

PictureSTEP 7
Applied a 2nd finish coat.

PictureSTEP 8
We built custom arched doors, installed euro hidden hinges, custom pulls and aligned. We installed brush nickle adjustable shelf tracks, added shelf pegs and installed 6 shelves. Drilled holes for TV and cables and placed the TV in position. Installed under-cabinet lights in each arch and a luan top/cap to hide all wiring. Now...Just add your decor and enjoy your new entertainment unit by Donlin Construction.

Case Study #DC0406 Challenging the Customer (with Modern Design and Ideas)

Ever think about what a contractor thinks about? No?...maybe not, but we think about what you may think about as a home owner. It's our job to. See to you, it may just be a kitchen, but to us...it's one of your most functional spaces in your home and where you may spend your most active time in, so why not give it the attention it needs?

We have had many customers over the years simply say that they just want to make their kitchen better, but are not exactly sure what they want.

OK, no problem, but we will need to know in order to give you an accurate estimate to improve your culinary space. We are curious and do attribute most of our success we have had in construction to our curiosity. To us, your kitchen is a partially blank canvas along with being a highly functional space and we are very curious about how exactly you use it? We analyze your existing layout and design. We take notes on how you use it and how you view it. We ask you in what ways you think you could improve it and about any ideas you may have had or even pictures you have seen that resembles what you may want. We want to know how you entertain and about the flow of your movements through the space. Does it make sense? Is it visually pleasing? Is it functional? Does it work with your other spaces?

Once we have collected all the measurements and data, we start working on matching products that visually and functionally meet your needs, placing quality products in proper locations, and consider your tastes and existing living space. We analyze you. We do. In the best of ways. We understand that you do not do this for a living and that we have many years experience, 1500 completed jobs and plenty of field data to help support our suggestions in giving your project a positive direction.

You pitch your ideas, we listen. We add to them and/or challenge them in the most loving way to make sure you know what you  what you want. Consider it an open discussion and a meeting of the minds. We introduce you to products you may have never seen or ever been hands on with. We discuss their functionality and availability and help you make decisions by budgeting your project to try and maximize your remodel.

We understand that change is hard and some of you may not be that flexible or open to different products. No problem, we ultimately want what you want...we want you to love your new kitchen.

In the project pictured above, we listened to all the customer's needs and vision AND after careful research, analyzing and suggestions....we both realized that what he thought he wanted, wasn't what he really wanted. It was bigger and better, more modern and stylish, cooler and alive, more functional and best of all we helped them develop their ideas which took a different direction than they originally planned. All it took is was a couple interviews, some suggestions and a little bit of challenging and weeding out ideas by planting new ones. Team work...yes...team work.

We commend our customer's who have taken chances on their projects with us, because in the end, it always seems to have greater emotional value than monetary value and that's worth the challenge.

We have been calling it CREATIVE CONSTRUCTION...stay tuned for more.
